Poolside Lighting Transformation in Sussex
Project overview
A residential homeowner approached us looking for support with their electrics for their back garden refurbishment project, which included the addition of a new pool. They wanted outdoor lighting that would complement the landscaping works, enhance the area, and make the space a usable and atmospheric place to enjoy in the evenings. Their goal was to create a warm, inviting atmosphere perfect for family enjoyment and entertaining guests – and we had just the solutions and expertise to help them achieve their dream.
What were the challenges?
This residential project presented a few challenges. Our team needed to address these issues to deliver a safe, functional and visually stunning lighting solution, challenges included:
The existing outdoor lighting had been disconnected for years due to electrical faults.
The garden had become overgrown and was in a poor state of repair.
Four independently switched circuits were required, but running switch cables through the new paving would have caused significant disruption.
The garden’s grey colour palette needed to appear warm and inviting at night.
Coastal location meant high corrosion risk, necessitating durable fittings.
Pool safety regulations required all lighting in zone 1 to be 12V or 24V.
A balance was needed between functional lighting for stairs and pathways and feature lighting for visual impact, avoiding glare.
What was the solution?
Our certified electricians conducted an in-depth site survey with the client and construction company to get a scope of the project sequence, planting plan and overall design theme.
Based on this visit, we delivered the following solutions:
Installed a completely new lighting infrastructure using a wireless FM switching system from RF Solutions, allowing independent control of multiple circuits without disturbing the paving.
Selected warm white lighting to soften the grey surfaces and create a cozy, welcoming atmosphere.
Chose corrosion-resistant fittings suitable for the coastal environment.
Made sure to meet compliance with pool zone 1 safety requirements for low-voltage lighting.
We presented the client with a detailed lighting plan and mood board, showing cable runs, light locations and the impact of warm lighting on key features
What was the installation process?
The installation was coordinated with the construction company’s six-week, weather-dependent schedule. Our team progressively installed the cabling infrastructure as each garden section was completed, making sure there was minimal disruption. Old lighting systems were removed and responsibly disposed of, and the new system was fully tested for functionality.
What were the results?
The lighting system we installed completely transformed the customer’s garden into a stunning, usable space. The wireless switching system now allows the client to set the mood by controlling circuits independently, and the warm white lighting enhances grey surfaces, blending visual appeal with a welcoming ambiance. It was a perfect design for the space, successfully balancing functional lighting for safety with feature lighting to highlight key areas. Our customer now enjoys an outdoor space with their much desired ‘WOW’ factor.
